Types of Solar photo voltaic power generation systems
Solar photo voltaic power plants have become immensely popular and their usage has been steadily increasing over the last few years with close to 2 GW installed capacity in India. Solar photo voltaic power plants generate clean and green energy which does not cause any harmful effect to the environment. There are different types of solar photo voltaic power generation system, each catering to different needs. The different types of solar photo voltaic power generations systems are discussed here.
Hybrid Solar Power Generation System
In this system, the generated solar power is stored in battery bank and then utilised as and when required. It used in conjunction with grid to charge the battery when solar power is not available. The DC solar power stored in the battery is converted to AC via inverter so that the AC powered appliances can be used. This system is widely called solar off grid.
Applications: Solar Power Generation system in areas where there is a frequent power outages
Stand alone Battery based Solar Power Generation System
This is same as the hybrid solar power generation system. The difference in the absence of the inverter and the grid power. The appliances that can be used in this system are DC powered and hence there is no need for the inverter.
Applications: Solar Home Lighting System | Solar Street Lights | Small solar charging applications
Standalone Solar Photo Voltaic Power Generation System
This system is connected to the grid and does not have batteries. The generated solar power is utilised at the same time of generation. The power output in this system will depend on clear sky. Presence of cloud will affect the output.
Applications: Solar Water Pumps
On Grid (or Grid Tie) Solar Photo Voltaic Power Generation System
In the on grid or grid tie solar photo voltaic power generation system, the generated solar power can be utilised directly without any storage. This eliminates the need for an storage devices such as battery. The solar power generated can be exported to the grid and if any additional power is required, then it can be imported from the grid. The export and import is facilitated by the presence of Net meter. However the presence of grid power is essential for this system to work. In case of power failures, this system will not work.
Applications: Solar Power Plants | Rooftop Solar Power generation systems
On Grid (or Grid Tie) Hybrid Solar Photo Voltaic Power Generation System
This system is very similar to the On Grid system. In addition to the above On Grid system, this has a battery bank, which can store energy and can supply power during power failures, unlike the on grid system, which does not supply power during power failures.
Applications: Rooftop Solar Power generation systems in areas where there is a frequent power failures.
